If I file exempt on my w-4 does will I still get a refund next year?

I am currently a college student and am eligible to file exempt because I did not owe taxes last year and I'm sure I won't owe taxes next year. I know that claiming exempt excludes taxes from being withheld from my check so will that mean I won't get a refund next year? If I won't, will I still be allowed my college credit for $1000?
